5 lessons from the book : " The Smart Surfers "

1) The first lesson is that we should respect other people's privacy. We cannot use someone's password.
2) The second lesson is that we must not trust a website that teaches you how to cheat, we should know what's right and wrong and not let what you read from the internet influence you.
3) The third lesson is that we should not infringe copyright. The copyright belongs to the creator. It protects the work of the creator from being used by others without permisson.
4) The fourth lesson is that we should not cyberbully. Cyberbullying is an unacceptable behaviour.
5) The fifth lesson is that we should not let gaming affect our schoolwork.
6) the sixth lesson is that we should not share personal information online.

Honey Fungus - One of the largest living organisms

Honey fungus or Armillaria is a genus of parasitic fungi that live on trees and woody shrubs. It includes about 10 species formerly lumped together as A. mellea.
Armillaria is long lived and form some of the largest living organisms in the world. The largest single organism (of the species Armillaria ostoyae) covers more than 3.4 square miles (8.9 km²) and is thousands of years old. As a forest pathogen, Armillaria can be very destructive. It is responsible for the "white rot" root disease (see below) of forests and is distinguished from Tricholoma (mycorrhizal) by this parasitic nature. Its high destructiveness comes from the fact that, unlike most parasites, it doesn't need to moderate its growth in order to avoid killing its host, since it will continue to thrive on the dead material.

H1N1 flu

Influenza ("flu") is an infection caused by a virus called the influenza virus. Symptoms of influenza, such as fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, muscle ache, and tiredness are usually more severe compared to the common cold, which is caused by other respiratory viruses.

2009 Influenza A (H1N1), also written as ‘Influenza A (H1N1-2009)’ (previously referred to as "new strain of swine flu") is a new strain of influenza virus that spreads from human to human.

Influenza A (H1N1-2009) spreads from human to human in the same way as seasonal flu. Flu can be spread when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or speaks. The flu viruses are transmitted into the air through droplets and other people breathe in the viruses. When these viruses enter the nose, throat, or lungs of a person, they begin to multiply, causing symptoms of the flu. The viruses can also be spread indirectly when a person touches a surface with flu viruses on it (for example, a door knob) and then touches his or her nose or mouth. Transmission can also occur when an infected person shares food with others during mealtime without a serving spoon.

In Asia, the countries with H1N1 Flu are China, Japan, 4 cornfirmed cases each. Malaysia, 2 confirmed cases.

Prevention

Since the illness occurs through direct contact with infectious material and respiratory secretions, it is important to practise good personal hygiene. Take these everyday steps to protect your health:

Cover Your Nose and Mouth
With a tissue when you cough or sneeze and dispose the tissue properly in the trash after use.
Wash Your Hands
Regularly and thoroughly with soap and water.
Before and after preparing food
After going to the toilet
Before and after eating
After blowing your nose
After using your hand when coughing or sneezing
Contain the Spread of Flu
Use a serving spoon when sharing food from a common dish.
Do not share personal items such as toothbrushes and towels.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
If you are sick, avoid crowded areas and wear surgical mask.
Stay at home and do not go to work or school if ill.
See your family doctor if you have flu like symptoms and if you had recent travel to areas with cases of Influenza A(H1N1).
Build Up Your Immunity
If you are a smoker, quit smoking. It harms you and your family.
Take more fruit and vegetables. Fruit and vegetables are the most power-packed combination of nutrients your body needs for good health.
Drink the equivalent of 8 glasses of fluid daily.
Engage in 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity on 5 or more days a week.
Learn to relax and rest.
Keep Your Environment Clean
Do not throw leftover food on the floor or in the open.
Do not leave food in common areas for stray animals.
The symptoms of influenza A (H1N1-2009) in people are similar to the symptoms of seasonal influenza. An early symptom is high fever, and this is followed by cough, sore throat, runny nose, and sometimes breathlessness a few days later Yes, so they would know when they should go to the doctor.

Earth Day

Earth day is a day to learn about the planet and how to take care of it. It is important to take care of the earth so that all living things will not perish.

"Save The Earth" means to keep the earth clean and green so that all living things can survive.

It is important to reduce, reuse and recycle because :

1) We can save the trees by recycling and reusing papers. Recycled paper uses less energy and water to produce. The process also produces less air and water pollution. One ton of waste paper is equal to 17 trees.

2) We spent $1.8 m to deal with our waste. Minimise waste makes economic sense.

Each of us can make a conscious decision and effort to make green practices and green consumerism an integral part of our daily lives by taking stock of our lifestyle in the areas of:

Clean Environment- living in a clean & pest-free environment,

City of Gardens & Water- saving water, planting a garden and conserving our greenery,

Energy Efficiency and Resource Conservation-practicing energy efficiency, waste minimization

Kindness

Kindness means how you behave and respond with another person. It means courtesy, respect and haivng good manners.

It is important to have kindness so that we can live together peacefully. If there is no kindness, we will be fighting, shouting and killing each other.
People can show their kindness by being considerate or respectful. We should turn down the volume of the television while neighbours are sleeping. I show kindness everyday by greeting my grandparents. In school, I show kindness by taking turns when we are playing games.

I feel good when I show kindness.
